Pennywise, often referred to as "It," is a shapeshifting, malevolent entity primarily known from the horror adaptations of Stephen King's novel It.
In film and television, Pennywise most famously takes the form of a clown, a guise used to lure children, his preferred prey. His first major appearance in this form was in the 1990 television miniseries It, portrayed by Tim Curry. Subsequent film adaptations, like the 2017 and 2019 movies (It and It Chapter Two), featured Bill Skarsgård in the role, offering a different, arguably more terrifying, interpretation of the character.
Beyond his clown persona, Pennywise can manifest as anything that inspires fear in his victims. He dwells within the sewers of Derry, Maine, awakening periodically to terrorize and feed on the town's inhabitants, particularly children. He is an ancient, cosmic evil, feeding off of the fear and negativity he generates.
